ISO

Get to know:

ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is a world federation of National Standardization Agencies, with only one representative per country, looking to facilitate international trades of assets and services and develop cooperation in the fields of intellectual, scientific, technological and economic activity. It is a non-governmental organization established in 1947, of which ABNT is the founding member.

On the technical works by ISO, qualified representatives from the industry, research institutes, and government authorities. Organizations of consumers and world standardization organisms gather as partners to solve global standardization problems, in search of consensus.

The works developed by ISO cover a wide range of techno-scientific sectors, except electro-electronic fields and telecommunications, for which the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the Telecommunications Union (ITU) are responsible, and with which ISO maintains a great relationship.

Technical committees:

The technical work made by ISO is decentralized, being able to be performed by several Technical Committees (TC), Subcommittees (SC) and Work Groups (WG). In the scope of a TC or a SC by ISO, a delegate represents its National Standardization Organism and not a company or entity to which it provides its services.

All the members have the right to take part in a TC or SC, as a P member (participant) or an O member (observer).

The P member must actively take part in the works and is obligated to participate in the voting of documents and, whenever possible, be present at international meetings.

The O member must monitor the works, as an observer, with the right to receive the documents related to the TC or the SC.

The TC or SC may institute Work Groups (WG) for specific tasks. Each WG must have a Coordinator designated by the corresponding TC or SC, which will be in charge of coordinating the works, with or without a Secretary.

Brazilian participation:

To take part in international meetings, Brazilian delegations are created to collaborate in the elaboration of the international standard. The obligation of the Brazilian delegate to act on a TC, SC or WG by ISO is to defend and promote the national position focused on the theme of the meeting, which was previously established by the Brazilian Committee (CB), Sector Standardization Organism (ONS) or a Special Study Commission (CEE).

It is worth remembering that the Brazilian delegate is not an ISO member, but a member of the Brazilian delegation which will represent the member, in this case, the ABNT. Those Brazilian specialists must not state their opinions individually at the meetings with other representatives from the other delegations, but the national positioning previously established.

The designation of a delegation member is made by a proposal from the CB, ONS or corresponding CEE. A few points must be taken into consideration, such as: proven experience on the theme, decision making capacity to accept or defend the proposals discusses and capacity to express oneself in English.

On delegations comprised by more than one delegate, the CB, ONS or CEE must propose the delegation head, which will be the representative at the meeting.
